Butte College Is One of 28 California Community College’s Eligible for Aspen Prize

Butte College is one of 28 California Community Colleges eligible to apply for the 2023 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence from the Aspen Institute. The Aspen Institute selected 150 colleges nationally to apply for the prestigious award that honors strong student outcomes.

The Aspen Prize honors colleges with outstanding achievement in critical areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, workforce success, and equity for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. The selection committee assesses student outcomes at over 980 community colleges in the United States, leading to the selection of 150 semifinalists, 10 finalists and, ultimately, one winner.

“This is a huge honor for Butte College,” said Samia Yaqub, Butte College President. “This is a great feather in our cap and I’m so proud of our faculty and staff to be eligible to be selected out of 150 colleges nationwide to participate in this process.”

The Aspen Institute uses the selection process to understand the community college practices that best foster student success and equity and incorporate that understanding through its fellowships, research, and presentations.
